Customer Rating: Summary: Terrible Comment: I've had 4 of these and while they control and handle great, they are not durable at all. They break all the time. The switches inside always go bad. I even repaired one and it still went bad after a few months. These sticks just aren't manufactured very well. I don't see how they make it out of quality assurance. Stick with the Hori sticks, I've had much better luck with those. Customer Rating: Summary: good when it works Comment: THIS JOYSTICK IS GOOD WHEN IT WORKS, AS STATED BY OTHERS IT IS VERY WELL BUILT AND HEAVY & STURDY.I USED IT ONCE AND WHEN I TRIED IT A SECOND TIME IT DIDNT WORK AND IT DID DAMAGE THE VIBRATION FUNCTION OF MY PS2.I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED AND CALLED THE CUSTOMER SERVICE PHONE# LISTED FOR PELICAN AND THEY SAID THAT THIS ITEM IS VERY OLD AND THAT THEY NO LONGER MAKE IT, THEREFORE THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO.I DONT RECCOMEND THIS IF YOU OWN A PS2.I REPEAT I USED IT ONCE AND I HAD BOUGHT 2 OF THEM AND WHEN I DID TRY THAT 2ND TIME NIETHER OF THEM WORKED. Customer Rating: Summary: Great arcade stick great price. Comment: I am a big fan of 2D arcade fighters. Street Figher, King of the fighers, Fatal Fury. You name it and I have played and mastered it.
This joystick is well constructed. You will notice this the first time you hold it in your lap. I have used all diffrent kinds of joysticks and this is second to the Arcade X joysick. at a much more reasonable cost.
I have never had any problems with it burning out my PS2. I would contribute that to faulty PS2 and not the contoller. I opened it up and tested the currents and they all operated withen the standard range for PS2, Gamecube and Xbox electical input.
The only gripe I have with the controller is that the 8 button set up is just a tad diffrent than a usual arcade machine. the first 2 buttons drop down for some sort of sytlish look. This creates a small but nonetheless distracting learning curve where you need to relearn how to press the buttons for simple fighting games like street fighter or mortal combat. It is really not that bad though once you get used to it. and the inserts that can be put on the front to show what buttons are what for each console, is a great idea, and will help you a great deal.
This contoller also shines in the emulation department. I play a lot of old neo geo games. and playing them on a game pad just doesn't cut it. Using this controller and a converter I can relive the glory days of the old arcade fighting classics in the style they were meant to be played. Customer Rating: Summary: An affordable way to bring the arcade home Comment: My friends and I have been playing quite the assortment of 2-D and 3-D fighters lately spanning Game Cube, XBOX, and the PS2. During a recent visit to a local mall, I played a game of Tekken 5. While I'm not too bad at console fighters, I wasn't used to the arcade stick and button layout of the arcade machine. This prompted me to look into arcade sticks. I had read great things about the X-Arcade stick, but it was a bit out of reach for this college student's wallet. Fortuantely, I found the Pelican Arcade Stick at an attractive price.
The first thing to note about this stick is it's heavy-duty construction and extra conveniences. The cabinet is made out of a tough vinyl-coated wood which is secured together with an army of black screws. When I say heavy, I mean heavy! This stick is heavier than it looks, but this offers stability when you're hammering away at your favorite arcade prot. The upper left corner of the deck has slotted metal bracket which holds the included reference cards that tell you the button correlation of your console's native controller. A storage compartment on the rear of the cabinet allows you store the cord of the stick when it's not in use.
This stick is responsive! The smallest button press registers with the game. This asures that you won't miss a kick or punch in the midst of gameplay. I give Pelican high marks for making this stick competitive.
Do you play online fighters such as DOA Ultimate for XBOX? You are probably going to want to use your headset. Pelican smartly cleverly addressed this by including a XBOX memory card/accessory slot into the front of the cabinet.
After using this stick for a few weeks, I do have a few -small- gripes. The cabinet spans more than the width of my lap and holding the stick there can be uncomfortable before too long. I'd recommend setting the stick atop a coffee table or similar surface if you're going to be playing very long. I was also disappointed by the foam pads that cover the screws on the bottom of the cabinet. Many of mine had fallen off in the packaging. A small annoyance, yet they can be easily replaced.
I see that another reviewer noted that this stick shorted out his/her rumble feature and that this stick does not work with the new slim PS2s. First off, I own a slim PS2 and this stick works fine with it. However, we tried it on my friends first-gen PS2 and it did not work. Fotunatley, Pelican takes pride in its product and offers the buyer a solution if the stick does not work. In the warranty, Pelican promises to replace or repair any system damaged by their product. This warranty lasts 5 years, so you shouldn't have to worry about deciding to buy this arcade stick.
This stick is deffinitely the closest you're going to come to an arcade feel for half of what an X-Arcade Stick costs. It works great for fighters and other games as well, such as 2-D sidescrollers like the Metal Slug series. It's hard to be disappointed with this stick and I feel that you get more than what you pay for.
-----Update 7/12/05-----
I plugged the stick in recently to play Guilty Gear X2 only to find that the stick no longer works. Worse, my replacement stick doesn't work either. I'm begining to wonder as to whether or not this product may be a danger to your PS2's controller ports. Customer Rating: Summary: This controller can hurt your system Comment: Even though I loved this controller, I can not in good conscience recommend this "Universal" version of it. The reason is because the "Universal" version actually has compatibility issues with the Playstation 2 which can cause it to short out the rumble feature of your system, which can cause certain third-party materials to not work to their full potential and will cause this stick in particular to not work at all.
If you do not have a Playstation 2, this stick will work fine. If you plan to use it on your Playstation 2, however, then search out the non-universal version, which will not have this problem.
Also, the "Universal" version of this controller does not work with the new, slim model of PS2.
