Summary: Period Storytelling
Comment: The Point is a story that takes place in a timeless, mythical kingdom; but, it incorporates a little of the hip vernacular of the `70s, so there are a few semantic hurdles for younger viewers. Nonetheless, it is a tale well told about the merits of raising a child according to his or her (in this case, his) nature. The main character, the boy, Oblio, is outcast, a victim of social conventions, prejudices and jealousies. His subsequent adventures lead him to discover things about himself and the world around him. The film touches upon the nuances of fitting into society without losing your identity, and it does so optimistically, without getting lost in bleak contradictions. The animation was innovative at the time of the film's release (corresponding aesthetically to then contemporary artwork) and it holds up well today. The dialogue is accessible by both young and old and the music is composed and performed by a master, Harry Nilsson. Make some hot coco or popcorn for the kids and enjoy this family film.

Comment: It wasn't the version I thought it was, I didn't realize there was a USA version a UK version. But it was the same story so it was still great.

Comment: This is a childhood favorite of mine. I purchased this for my daughter so I could share my fond memories with her. She loves it now too!

Summary: A new generation sees "the point!"
Comment: My four year old daughter fell in love with this movie when I rented it and asked Santa for a copy for Christmas! There is a great moral to this children's tale that hold up all these years later. I highly recommend it...though not as flashy and fancy as today's animated films, The Point certainly delievers its point today as well as decades ago.

Summary: Pointedly Pro
Comment: As a child, I grew up with this movie. I still have an old VHS copy, although the first viewing I can remember came on Public Broadcasting. Harry Nilsson's "The Point" frequently takes me back to my younger years, sitting with my mother on the couch and loving the tale of Oblio and Arrow seeking true meaning in a world in which they have become outcasts.

While the animation pales into comparison to today's slick digital tomes, I almost prefer the point because you can see the artistic vision coming through in all of its watercolor beauty. Some of the images also are a bit dated, but the impact is not lost.

For anyone who claims to be a fan of Nilsson's, this is a must have. For anyone who enjoys a simple, modern fairy tale, this is a good buy.
