Editorial Reviews:

"Let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave."

These ominous words, slashed from the pages of a book of Psalms, are the last threat that the darling of London society, Sir Edward Grey, receives from his killer. Before he can show them to Nicholas Brisbane, the private inquiry agent he has retained for his protection, Sir Edward collapses and dies at his London home, in the presence of his wife, Julia, and a roomful of dinner guests.

Prepared to accept that Edward's death was due to a longstanding physical infirmity, Julia is outraged when Brisbane visits and suggests that Sir Edward has been murdered. It is a reaction she comes to regret when she discovers the damning paper for herself, and realizes the truth.

Determined to bring her husband's murderer to justice, Julia engages the enigmatic Brisbane to help her investigate Edward's demise. Dismissing his warnings that the investigation will be difficult, if not impossible, Julia presses forward, following a trail of clues that lead her to even more unpleasant truths, and ever closer to a killer who waits expectantly for her arrival.

Summary: Does Not live Up to Four Stars. . .
Comment: Deanna puts a lot into her characters, however, I need more action sooner in the book. I found myself saying I can't believe I'm still reading this - where is the good stuff? I was disappointed in the quick climax and wrap up. I doubt I'll read another of her books.

Again, I went by other reviews and found myself disappointed because I expected more.

Summary: good read
Comment: Haven't finished it yet but so far it is keeping my attention and seems like a good start to a series.

Summary: Excellent first time author.
Comment: I was searching for a book I could really sink my teeth into. I found it with Deanna Raybourn. She is an author to watch for. The minute I picked up her book and started reading I couldn't put it down. It begins with Lady Julia's husband Edward dying. She is told by Nicholas Brisbane that he thinks Edward was murdered. Lady Julia doesn't accept this until a year later when she finds evidence that Nicholas might be right. There are twists and turns as you read on with more information surfacing about all the characters. You won't be sorry to read this author. I can't wait to start the next one in the series.

Summary: A good Victorian mystery set in London
Comment: The book opens with the death of protagonist Lady Julia Grey's husband, though the majority of the action comes a year later when she realizes that he may have been murdered: she begins to investigate the matter with the help of possible Love Interest and detective Nicholas Brisbane, who has a number of secrets of his own.

Silent in the Grave is very well-written overall, and surprisingly entertaining; up until the last hundred pages I was all prepared to go write a glowing five-star review. But it fails to live up to the expectations set by the beginning of the novel - and, honestly, by the jacket text. A blurb by Karen Harper says it has "one of the most clever endings I've seen" (yes, most clever, not cleverest) while Valerie Anand praises "some lovey twists in the plot and a most satisfactory surprise ending."

That - combined with the quality of the beginning and middle part - led me to expect something truly amazing, which it wasn't at all. The plot seemed sort of average. It was clever, in a way, but also sort of unlikely. The final couple pages in which Julia doesn't expect to see Nicholas again were particularly annoying, because it was so blatantly obvious that she would in fact do so before the end of the book - it felt like I'd read the same ending dozens of times before.

Still, I don't want to let my disappointment over "the novel that could have been" make this sound like an awful book. It really isn't, at all, and I'm looking forward to reading Silent in the Sanctuary.

Summary: A romantic Victorian mystery.
Comment: Deanna Raybourne's Silent in the Grave, is a hard to put down Victorian mystery, both suspenseful and humorous in its details, that unmasks the consequences of that society's moral, gender and class codes upon individuals within society.

Silent in the Grave is a mystery rich in well-researched historical details but also a fast-paced read as each clue unmasks another mysterious layer. Infused with sadness, Silent in the Grave provides humorous relief as the clues lead the reader into an ever increasing dark reality hidden by the masks of Victorian society.

The unmasking of the villain leads to ever increasing shocking details. Murder will out, not only the deed but all the dark truths behind the deed. An exceptional emotional and riveting read!
