Summary: Uneventual
Comment: A little slow? Painstakingly, at best. The first 220 pages are detailed descriptions of the family outings, food, and dresses. Once a murder finally did happen, the plot started to become too crammed, too unrealistic, and a little boring. A family of 10 in a snowbound house and there is:
1) A murder
2) an attempted murder
3) kidnapping
4) theivery
5) a ghost
And all that crammed into the last 220 pages! A little too slow in the beginning and a little too jumpy at the end, as if the first part of the book was leisurely written and the last part was punched out in time for a publishing deadline! I only managed to skim the last 200 pages, just because I was already halfway through! It was incredibly disappointing in comparison the Silence in the Grave. I don't know if I will be reading the third book of this series and I don't recommend this book as a "good read."

Summary: It only gets better...waiting until March for the 3rd book.
Comment: It was with great anticipation that I read the recently released Lady Julia Gray mystery over summer break, Silent in the Sanctuary. I adore books written in a series. The reader gets to really know the characters and the author gets to fully develop storylines. And, a good author rarely disappoints with his/her subsequent books even when the initial book in the series is outstanding.
This can be said of the second entry in Deanna Raybourn's Victorian England mystery series - Silent in the Sanctuary, featuring Lady Julia Grey. All the wonderful attributes of the first book Silent in the Grave are present in Sanctuary. There is wonderful character development and an excellent opportunity for the reader to get to know Julia's family better. The primary and secondary plots are all tightly developed without ever feeling contrived or forced. And, as with Grave, there is a smattering of clever twists - both in plot development and in the characters - that keep the book interesting and unpredictable.

Summary: Keeps you Glued Wondering What Is Next
Comment: I was introduced to Deanna Raybourn by my daughter. I went to a booksigning in Houston with my daughter and found Ms. Raybourn to be a delightful, down-to-earth person. I then read her first book, Silent in the Grave, and loved it.
I then read Silent in the Sanctuary and enjoyed it equally as much. These are books that keep you glued, wondering what will happen next. They are not in the least boring. The last one I read on a rainy day recently making it a most enjoyable day.
I am looking forward to the third one. So glad my daughter recommended this author, and I hope she returns to Houston for her new booksigning. I am definitely a fan, and will be reading all her books in the future. I believe she is successful now, and will only continue to be more so in the years ahead.

Summary: Worth reading!
Comment: Lady Julia Grey made her introduction to us in Deanna Raybourn's first book, "Silent in the Grave." I plodded through "Grave" and found myself annoyed with Brisbane, her anti-hero, but infatuated with Julia's world. I didn't love "Grave" but couldn't wait to begin reading "Silent in the Sanctuary." It fulfilled every bit of my hopes; I gorged myself on it.
The world of Lady Julia was well drawn in "Grave." I loved the details of Julia's home, her clothes, her interests, her friends, her meals, her maids, etc. Everything was fascinating and very realistic - that is, I could believe in the reality of the character's experiences, especially her childhood and family. In "Sanctuary," we go to Lady Julia's childhood home for Christmas. Five of the ten children are visiting, along with two cousins, a moldering aunt, her father's paramour, and assorted other characters - including Julia's heartthrob, Brisbane, who arrives sporting a new title and a new fiancee. The details of Julia's experience and the experiences of her family and friends again ring true and are enthralling. I loved everything about this book; this is the one that "Grave" wanted to be.
The only false note is Julia's maid, Morag, who is unrelentingly surly and unpleasant to Lady Julia. It is difficult to understand why she would put up with such behavior, even if she did take on Morag as a favor to her aunt. It is a small bad note, however, and is barely worth mentioning in such a satisfying book.

Summary: Enjoyable read
Comment: I enjoyed this book. The writing is strong, and the character development is well done. The author keeps you guessing. I recommend Tasha Alexander's books above these, but if you like her books, you'll like the two in this series so far.
