Editorial Reviews:

Knitting is hot, with 4 million newcomers in the last few years joining a core group of 38,000,000 knitters nationwide. And these are primarily young, creative, connected chicks with sticks who are coming together in living rooms, knitting cafes, and chic yarn stores, and making everything from funky hats to bikinis.

In Stitch 'n Bitch, Debbie Stoller-founder of the first Stitch 'n Bitch knitting group in New York City-covers every aspect of knitting and the knitting-together lifestyle: the how-to, the when-to, the what-to, the why-to. Writing with wit and attitude (The Knitty-Gritty, Blocking for Blockheads), she explains the different types of needles and yarns (and sheep, too) and all the techniques from basic to fancy, knit to purl to cast-off. She also shares her special brand of corrective surgery for when things go wrong, and offers fun and informative sidebars on such topics as how to find the best yarn for less, how to make a buttonhole, knitting etiquette, and what tools to keep in your knitting bag. At the heart of the book are forty stylish patterns: Alien Scarf, Big Bad Baby Blanky, Mohair Hoodie, Kitty and Devil Hat, Cell Phone Cozy, and Wonder Woman Bikini. And for anyone interested: how to start a Stitch 'n Bitch group.

Summary: I like the spunk
Comment: This is the first book I have purchased in my efforts to learn how to knit. I enjoy the history of knitting and the pictures of all the tools but I think more pictures/drawings would be useful. I bought an accessories pack but have never used it because I don't know how. I might have to find a separate book on that. The step-by-step drawings and descriptions are good but sometimes you are left guessing if you completed the step correctly. A nice feature is that Debbie gives you the option to choose how you would like to knit, using the method that is most comfortable for you (right vs. left handed, holding the needles etc.). Right now I am working on my second scarf using the traditional knit stitch, so using this book without any prior knowledge is possible. She includes patterns for projects your grandmother probably would never produce, have fun!

Summary: This book taught me how to knit
Comment: I really wanted to learn how to knit. I loved the idea of making warm hats and scarves from twisting string. I am 30 years old, have no sewing experience and I do not come from a gene pool of crafty knitters so the odds were stacked up against me. I picked up this book about 2 months ago and I am now knitting every day. I have gone through most of the book and have made all of the beginner and intermediate level patterns. I am in no rush to get to the Fair Isle section but the instructions seem understandable. I am so happy I found this book. I was afraid I would be stuck with patterns that looked like 1980s bulky sweaters with the arms cut out. The patterns in this book are fresh and funky and there are quite a few of the patterns that can be completed in a weekend's time which is awesome if you just want to keep cranking knits out.
My boyfriend saw how excited I was and went ahead and bought me SNB Nation and The Happy Hooker. Seeing what lies ahead is exciting!
I highly recommend this book
